The Emergency Nurses Association has released a three-year strategic planthat charts the organization’s path through 2014 with an emphasis on achievinggoals in four broad areas. Advance Emergency Care at Home and Abroad

Strategies: Develop strategic partnerships; foster relationships thatsupport emergency nursing; expand advocacy opportunities in emergencyhealthcare policy; explore and provide innovative approaches in the developmentand delivery of programs, products and services.

General Assembly resolutions: Support the inclusion of ultrasound-guidedperipheral venous access within the scope of practice of RNs; collaborate,educate and advocate for the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine’s“Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” report.

Define, Identify and Advocate for a Culture of Safe Practice and SafeCare

Strategies: Develop strategic practice partnerships; recognize, support andpromote exemplary emergency nursing practice; proactively identify and addresskey clinical issues affecting emergency healthcare; recognize, support andpromote best practices for emergency nurses.

General Assembly resolutions: Develop position statement regardingassociation’s opposition to paid reservations for ED services; provideresources and education for managing mild to moderately ill children withdifficult venous access; convene a work team to recommend guidelines for thecare of chronically impaired patients in the ED; maintain database for injuryprevention educational programs that are promising and proven.
